Our Fees

The prices set out below are indicative of our standard charging rates for some of the areas of law in which we practise. There are various factors that can affect the precise sum charged on different matters and we have set out below a number of the factors which will be taken into account and which would mean that the standard charges would be varied. Mortgages and Re-mortgages

Costs are an average of £500 plus VAT and disbursements depending on a number factors including the value of the mortgage, the number of mortgages involved and whether any additional documents, such as transfers or deeds of postponement, are required. Disbursements typically include searches £250 (an average cost although search insurance may be available and a specific quote can be provided upon request) and Land Registry fees averaging £90. Residential conveyancing disbursements (Purchase)

Searches £250 (average for a standard residential purchase and includes VAT)
Land Registry fee £20-£910 (dependent upon the value of the property and whether the application can be made electronically, no VAT payable)
SDLT is payable on the purchase price and calculated in accordance with the rates published by HMRC at the time of completion. Your circumstances also affect what rates apply and whether reliefs are available. A specific estimate can be obtained by contacting us.
Our bank charges for transmitting money by same day telegraphic transfer are £15 plus VAT per transfer.

Residential conveyancing disbursements (Sale)

Land Registry title entries at £6 per copy (Registered titles only additional documents may be required and are charged at the same rate)
Land Charges and Index Map Searches (Unregistered titles only, minimum £5 and £2 for each additional Land Charges search required)
Our bank charges for transmitting money by same day telegraphic transfer are £15 plus VAT per transfer.

We would expect residential conveyancing transactions to be completed within an 8 to 16 week period depending on a number of factors including: whether the title is unregistered or registered, involves leasehold property or is defective and the length of time it takes for search results, mortgage offers, surveys and any consents to be issued to us, as well as the co-operation we receive from our clients and relevant third parties. This list is not exhaustive and other factors have a bearing on the timescale. These factors are largely out of our control and affect all other parties in the chain, to differing degrees. A longer chain can increase the timescale significantly.

Litigation Fees

Our litigation services are charged at an hourly rate of £240.00 + VAT. In relation to Small Claims proceedings our fees for completion of the matter are usually in the region of £3,000.00 to £5,000.00 + VAT plus Court fees and disbursements. Small Claims court fees depend on the amount claimed and the maximum fee for a sum below the Small Claims threshold is £455.

In relation to Claims that are Fast Track or Multi Track (value exceeding £10,000.00 or unusually complex) the charging rate is £240.00 per hour plus VAT and expected charges for taking the matter to trial for a full determination by the Court would be between £8,000.00 and £15,000.00 + VAT in solicitor’s fees and between £2,000.00 and £10,000.00 + VAT in Barrister’s fees plus any Court fees and other disbursements payable such as Expert Witnesses. Court fees for money claims above the Small Claims threshold are charged at 5% of the value of the claim.

Private Client fees


Our charges for a single straightforward Will range from £150 to £200 plus VAT. For a couple where there are two Wills and the terms mirror each other the total charge is in the region of £220 to £250 plus VAT.

Inheritance Tax Planning

In relation to complex Wills where advice on Inheritance Tax planning is required, we would normally charge an hourly rate of £240 plus VAT. The total of the firm’s fees will depend on the complexity of a Client’s requirements. In addition, you may need to seek Accountancy advice if there are complex tax issues which are outside the scope of our advice and you may have to obtain valuations in relation to any property and personal belongings.

Estate Administration

The costs of administering an estate will depend on the individual circumstances of the matter. The number of assets and beneficiaries will vary from estate to estate. Our basic charge is based on the amount of time spent on the matter at our hourly rate of £240 plus VAT for a Senior Probate Practitioner (Solicitor or Legal Executive) and £140 plus VAT for a Junior Probate Practitioner (Legal Executive).

Our fees will include an additional charge of up to 1% of the value of any cash assets handled by us, excluding any property owned by the deceased. A separate charge will apply to the sale or transfer of any property owned by the deceased. For this charge, please see details set out above relating to our Conveyancing Services.

Grant application only

Should this firm be instructed to obtain a Grant of Representation only then the firm’s fees will range from £750 to £3,000 plus VAT for estates where there is no Inheritance Tax liability. If the estate is liable for Inheritance Tax then there will be additional work for obtaining the Grant of Representation and the firm’s fees will range from £2,500 to £6,000 plus VAT.

The range reflects the variety of forms and documents required depending on the nature and complexity of the estate.

Probate disbursements

Probate disbursements
In addition to our fees, disbursements are also payable and listed as follows:-

Probate application fee –
currently £155.00 plus an additional fee of £1.50 for each Office Copy

Land Charges Department Search (full/bankruptcy)-
£2.00 plus VAT for the deceased and each beneficiary (as applicable)

Statutory Notices for Creditors in the London Gazette and the local newspaper to protect against unexpected creditors and claims from the estate –
The fees range between £150 to £300 plus VAT (actual cost based on location)

Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

There are two types of LPA –
Property and Financial Affairs; and Health and Welfare.

For a single person the firm’s fees for one of these documents is £350 plus VAT and for both £600 plus VAT.

For a couple, the firm’s fees for one of these documents is £600 plus VAT and for both £900 plus VAT.

A Court fee of £82.00 is payable in respect of each document. The fees can, however, be subject to remission or an exemption.
